Welcome to the Farm Box

Posted by BobWms on July 4th, 2009

A chuck wagon circa 1865 used on the farm and in agriculture. A farm box is a container that one loads up with all the equipment, tools and supplies that will be needed for a farm project. Much like the chuck wagon to the left. We owned and operated a 180 acre farm located along the bank of Valley Creek in Northwestern Runnels county, Texas, USA. In the fall of 2005, we began a move to Central Kansas, USA.

Best Wireless Range Extender

Posted by BobWms on September 10th, 2008

Wilson Trucker antenna in a residential installation.
Repeatedly my neighbors and friends have asked me “What can I do to improve my cell phone reception at home or in the car? This is the single, most cost effective solution. You need to use an external antenna.

For this to work, you must first have some signal present. If you are in an area where your cell phone never works, then you might be so far out of range that practical antennas won’t make a difference. But if you can see a bar or two on your phone’s signal meter, if you can occasionally make or receive a call, then an external antenna is exactly what you need. If you routinely drive through areas of weak coverage, an external antenna will make the difference between talking and saying “Huhh?”

Farmers Aren’t Stupid

Posted by BobWms on August 20th, 2008

A Department of Water Resources representative stops at a Texas ranch and talks with an old rancher. He tells the rancher, I need to inspect your ranch for your water allocation.

The old rancher says, ‘Okay, but don’t go in that field over there.’

The Water representative says, ‘Mister, I have the Authority of the Federal Government with me. See this card? This card means I am allowed to go WHEREVER I WISH on any agricultural land. No questions asked or answered. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand?’

The old rancher nods politely and goes about his chores.

Later, the old rancher hears loud screams and spies the Water Rep running for his life and close behind is the rancher’s bull.

The bull is gaining with every step. The Rep is clearly terrified, so the old rancher immediately throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs………………………..

‘YOUR CARD! SHOW HIM YOUR CARD!’

Living In The Cell Phone Fringe

Posted by BobWms on January 12th, 2008

Definitions of fringe on the Web:

  • periphery: the outside boundary or surface of something
  • outskirt: a part of the city far removed from the center; “they built a factory on the outskirts of the city”

A Motorola Bag Phone, circa late 80's.
I’ve lived in a rural environment most of my life. With the exception of the 25 years I spent engaged in my chosen occupation, I’ve lived in the country

If It’s Good Enough For The Bull…

Posted by BobWms on July 26th, 2007

…It’s Good Enough For Me.

A farmer in Culpepper, VA went to the local branch of the Wachovia Bank to borrow money for a new bull. The loan was made and Banker Bill, who lent the money, came by a week later to see how the bull was doing.

Duals Tires On A One Ton Pickup? Not Mine!!

Posted by BobWms on April 7th, 2007

I’ve heard a lot of discussion about the subject of dual tires on a 1 ton pickup truck. People (especially pickup salesmen ) say “You have to have them” while others say “You ought to have them”. It’s my belief that they are completely unnecessary and here is why.

Capt’n Salsa’s Grill Roasted Yard Bird

Posted by BobWms on February 20th, 2007

By: Capt’n Salsa

Wow I have a hankering for some really good grill roasted chicken, the melt in your mouth variety with some fresh homemade salsa slathered right on top. Just seems that we never have time during the lazy days of summer to get everything done. You know, you have to mow the grass, weed the garden and if you’re lucky harvest a bounty of fresh produce from your own little truck farm.

One Time Federal Excise Tax Credit for 2006

Posted by BobWms on December 7th, 2006

Rural readers of this blog will be interested to know that you’ll be able to apply for a one time tax credit this year.
On May 25, 2006, the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) announced that it would stop collecting the federal excise tax on long-distance telephone service charges that are purely time based. Notice 2006-50 reverses the once defiant position of the IRS and states that taxpayers will no longer be required to pay a tax on charges for long-distance telephone service that are based solely on the amount of time for the phone call.
